Modifying tags
You can customize the names, icons, and so on for existing tags. Changes made to a tag are permanent but will not affect any uses of the tag prior to the change. For example, if you use the tag To Do with a check box as it is by default and change the icon later to a car icon, all To Do tags already in existence will still use the check box. To modify a tag, follow these steps:
- Right-click or press and hold on a tag in the drop-down list where all the tags are shown and choose Modify This Tag from the context menu that appears. If you simply want to delete the tag, choose Delete This Tag from the menu. The Modify Tag dialog box appears. You can see a preview of what your tag will look like in the Preview pane.
- Enter a new name in the Display Name field if desired. If you want, you can choose a new icon for the tag from the Symbol drop-down list, shown in Figure 3-6, as well as Font Color or Highlight Color from the appropriate dropdown lists.
- Click or tap OK.
Customizing or creating tags
The Customize Tags option has two main purposes: It allows you to add tags, and it serves as a jumping-off point to modify tags (as discussed in the previous section). For example, perhaps you want to add a tag beyond the two default tags for projects: Project A and Project B. With the Customize Tags option, you can create another tag for Project C. To modify a tag, right-click or press and hold on any tag and choose Customize Tags from the context menu that appears; from the Customize Tags window, select the tag and then click or tap Modify Tag and then follow :
- Enter a new name in the Display Name field if desired. If you want, you can choose a new icon for the tag from the Symbol drop-down list, shown in Figure 3-6, as well as Font Color or Highlight Color from the appropriate dropdown lists.
- Click or tap OK.
To create a new tag, follow these steps:
- Right-click or press and hold on any tag and choose Customize Tags from the context menu that appears. The Customize Tags window appears. By default, new tags are added to the top of the drop-down list, but the Ctrl keyboard shortcuts stay the same. So, if you add an icon and let it take the top spot, it takes on the Ctrl+1 keyboard shortcut, and all other tags get bumped down by one; the tag that had Ctrl+2 now has Ctrl+3, the tag that had Ctrl+9 has no tag, and so forth. Use the arrows at the upper right of this window to move tags up or down according to which shortcut you want them to have.
- Click or tap the New Tag button.
- Choose a new icon for the tag from the Symbol drop-down list, as well as Font Color or Highlight Color from the appropriate drop-down lists, as desired. Microsoft provides default symbols for you to choose from when you access the drop-down Symbols list box . As you can see at the lower left of the figure, there are even nine symbols that you can use to create more To Do or Priority tags, with varying colors and the number 1-3 on them.
- Click or tap OK.
tag` todo tag
The main purpose for tags is to organize note content for easy access later. To find a tag or tags, follow these steps:
- Select the Home tab on the Ribbon and click or tap Find Tags. The Tags Summary pane appears at the right of the OneNote interface,
- Choose an item from the Group Tags By drop-down list box, depending on your preferences for sorting tags. The options on the list box include:
- Tag Name: List tags by name.
- Section: List tags according to the section they’re in.
- Title: List tags according to title.
- Date: List tags by date modified.
- Note Text: Sort alphabetically by text accompanying the note.
- Click or tap a tag in the search results to navigate to that tag.
