Understanding Print Queues
Microsoft Help:-
print queue
, which occupies a reserved area of memory or disk that holds output designated for the printer until the printer can receive it. queuing refers to lining up jobs for a computer or device. suppose, if you are going to print a number of documents, the operating system (or a special print spooler) queues the documents by placing them in a special area called a print buffer or print queue. The printer then pulls the documents off the queue one at a time. Another term for this is print spooling
The order in which a system executes jobs on a queue depends on the priority system being used. Most commonly, jobs are executed in the same order that they were placed on the queue, but in some schemes certain jobs are given higher priority.
The operating system treats a physical printer as merely the destination of a print job generated by and passed through a system "Printer," The printer driver is the interface to the Printer that is used by applications to create print jobs via printer DCs. The I/O path for a Printer consists of several layers of system code culminating with a port monitor.
The port monitor is the interface to the physical printer at the down- stream end of a system Printer and is responsible for transferring the data of a print job across whatever connection exists to the physical printer.
The Spooler does not query for the state of a physical printer to which a Printer is connected. Instead, the state of a physical printer determines the success of a print job at the time it is despooled over the port monitor.
